Pacifiers

Pacifiers may be used by those who wish as an extra means of comfort in the newborn and infant period. Pacifiers should be of one piece construction, contain a shield with a ventilation hole and employ an orthodontic shape. Pacifiers should never be attached to the baby’s clothing via string or strap.

Dressing Your Baby

Your baby will be comfortable in the same temperature that makes you most comfortable (65 to 70 degrees F). Making the room like a sauna will only make your baby fussy and predispose them to heat rash. Clothe your baby as you would clothe yourself inside and outside. You may take the baby outdoors when you feel up to going out. It is important to protect your baby from wind, direct sunlight and extremes of either hot or cold.

Friends and Relatives

These people are interested in your infant and want to hold and hug him or her. Unfortu- nately, they are a potential source of infection for your baby. Children who are not siblings should not hold or kiss your baby. Adults who have colds or other infections should not be handling your child. Good hand washing can be helpful in preventing the spread of infections. Remember, too, that you will be tired for some time and will need your rest to keep up with your baby’s sleeping and eating habits. We suggest that you limit visits and phone calls for the first few weeks at home.
